Exporting Halal ready meals to Saudi Arabia: what SFDA registration means

Why the factory's SFDA registration is the gate to the GCC's biggest market, and how to structure a compliant export program for ready meals.

Saudi Arabia is the largest food market in the GCC, and for ready meals it's the obvious expansion after the UAE. It's also the market with the clearest gate: the Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) regulates what crosses the border, and products from unregistered foreign factories don't get in. If your manufacturer isn't SFDA-registered, your Saudi plan is a wish, not a plan.

What registration covers

SFDA registration is about the production site as much as the product: the facility, its food-safety systems, and its labeling all come under scrutiny. Working from a registered factory — MAM's Dubai facility is SFDA-registered and supplies Saudi Arabia — means the heaviest compliance work is already done, and your product enters under an approved site rather than starting the process from zero.

Halal certification is the second non-negotiable, and it must be real, auditable certification rather than a label on the pack. Buyers and regulators both check.

Designing the product for the journey

Export favors frozen. A one-year frozen shelf life absorbs sea freight, customs, and distributor lead times without stress; chilled export into Saudi is possible but demands an unusually disciplined cold chain. Arabic labeling, nutrition panels, and date formats need to be right on the artwork the first time — repacking after the fact destroys margins.

Documentation is the unglamorous half of export: certificates of origin, Halal certificates, health certificates, and consistent batch records. A manufacturer that exports routinely will hand you this paperwork as part of the order rather than treating it as your problem — that's the standard MAM works to, with transportation arranged by the buyer and the paperwork on us.

The realistic first shipment

Start with a focused range — a handful of proven recipes rather than the full catalogue — one committed distributor, and volumes your rotation can prove. From confirmed specification, a typical order is production-ready in about three weeks, which makes a quarterly shipping rhythm easy to plan. Tell us your target market and volume through the enquiry form and we'll confirm fit and the documentation pack for your route.
